My Roof is Leaking What Should I Do?

Noticing your roof is leaking is never a pleasant surprise. However, it is important to take immediate action when a leak is discovered to prevent any further and more expensive problems developing.

First Steps to take when your Roof is Leaking

When you spot the leak the first thing to do is to find a bucket to catch the falling water. If the leak is severe you should get a second bucket to replace the first bucket when it fills up. To get rid of the monotonous dripping sound you can prop a board up inside the bucket.

Once you have your bucket in place the next step is to dry out the area as soon as possible. Old towels or mops can be used to remove the water which has come from the leak. You can also use a fan if you have one to circulate the air and dry out the area. The bonus of this is it will prevent mould growing.

Contact a Roofer to Look at your Leaking Roof

Having completed the above steps, you have reduced the potential damage your leak can cause and you should contact a roof contractor to assess and repair the source of the leak. If you believe it is possible to claim for the leak and the associated damage with your insurance company, just get an estimate from the roofer for the repair work before committing to any work. If the insurance company approve your claim your repair costs will be covered by your insurance.

When your roof is examined by a roofing contractor they will not only inspect your roof but will examine the inside of your home on the underside of your roof to find water damage.

Why you Shouldn’t Wait if your Roof is Leaking

If your roof is leaking it is very important to act quickly. A leaking roof will not repair itself and will only deteriorate. Even if the leak is very small it has potential to cause significant problems both structural and financial in the future. Fixing a leak as soon as you notice it is the cheapest it will ever be to repair.

Regular Roof Inspections are your Best Way to Prevent Leaks

To avoid any leaks or serious damage occurring with your roof it is wise to get your roof inspected regularly and have the necessary maintenance work carried out. Like everything else when it comes to your roof prevention is better than cure.
